I said it twice and I will say it a 3rd They should have delayed this game. Everyone was telling them to and you know what they said? “Here have a ban-aid to fix up that Whole in your chest”. And if you think I’m just a hater I like many people was really hyped for the game, but after the demo that hope and hype died, But maybe if just maybe if this game goes on sale for maybe HMMM 15 bucks (Even thats asking to much) then maybe I will give it a shot.

  carlos82

  14carlos82Mon 29th Mar 2021

From the demo it seemed to be cobbled together from old Sega mechanics and sound effects but suffering from the old Sonic 3d games flaws of having too many characters (abilities in this case) to work with. Mario 64 and beyond were great because they built upon a few core mechanics to fine tune the gameplay and I feel this could really have benefited from having a much tighter focus in that regard. Even from the limited demo it seemed clear they couldn’t go too far with level design as they wouldn’t necessarily know what powers you were going to bring with you.

I’m a huge old school Sega fanboy who really enjoys the likes of Bug, Nights Into Dreams and Burning Rangers on the Saturn. Yet this just feels almost like a fan game thats just thrown in various elements from past games without ever understanding what made them fun in the first place

I didn’t bother with the demo and the trailers made this game look pretty poor and inexplicable. All of the comments about delays seem to ignore that the issues with the game largely aren’t technical shortcomings that can be addressed in a timely manner, but more mechanical and design wise. The issues that need to be resolved would likely result in a completely different game.

I’m a longtime Sega fan, but if I am being totally honest, it has been a loooooooooong time since Yuji Naka’s name being associated with a game gave me any sort of confidence.

It’s such a weak platformer at it’s core that it makes middle of the road late 90’s and early 2000’s forgettable 3D action/platformers games like Croc, or the Legend of Kay look like they’re Super Mario 64 or Crash Bandicoot.

It feels like a game that was made with blinkers as if no other 3D platformer existed and that being able to move and jump was good enough to start making a game with.

It’s a real shame, I had high hopes that this game would be something of an unofficial follow up to Nights, but the demo was pretty bad.

The lack of analogue control was baffling, considering Nights was designed around the Saturn’s 3D pad and the camera would constantly reset its position back behind the main character rather than stay where I’d placed it.

Apparently the 0-day patch addresses those things but without an updated demo I don’t really want to plonk down the cash to find out. It’s a real shame as I’d like to have supported Yuji Naka and show Squeenix that there is still a market for these types of games.

I would say Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima are simply behind on the times and ignored how platformers evolved in the past twenty years, much like the issues with Suzuki stance on game design and Shenmue 3, but this game doesn’t even hold a candle to Sonic Team’s offerings in the mid-90s.

NiGHTS and Burning Rangers on the Sega Saturn, the two non-Sonic games this pair is probably most known for, are better games overall.

NiGHTS’s gameplay isn’t all that similar to Balan Wonderworld, despite the aesthetic similarities, but is the perfect example of minimalism design working well. Balan Wonderworld aims for minimalistic controls in a genre where it doesn’t work.

Burning Rangers has certainly aged, but is a great experimental take on 3D platformers while the industry was still struggling to figure out how to make that genre work. Balan Wonderworld plays it way too safe in comparison.

If what Naka said was true, this was Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima only chance from Square Enix. This game is now a huge stain on their career and it’s going to be even harder to get a game greenlit elsewhere. It’s a shame, but they’re probably going to get sent to the Final Fantasy XIV sweatshop.

Balan seems like it’s failing to do what it set out to do. I think the game stands on its unique style and vibe alone which will probably be enough to get sales and carry some people through a slog of a game.

And just because the game is not focused on violence doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t a game adults would enjoy, and review poorly. Super Lucky’s Tale is a game designed for a younger audience and it still reviewed well. Many Nintendo games are enjoyed and designed for both younger and older audiences.

@Donnerkebab I think the craftsmanship of level design and the realization of the world those levels happen in is symbiotic and harmonious. I’d really recommend this video if you haven’t seen it. It breaks down just how INTRICATELY Tropical Freeze was in level design:

  https://youtu.be/d5wIIwBL784

When you compare these compelling characters in spaces that invite exploration with… whatever Balan Wonderworld is… the consistent quality of Nintendo becomes even more appreciable.

It’s idiotic to think that liking the fast action platforming gameplay in Sonic Adventure/Sonic Adventure 2/Sonic Heroes means you must automatically like this completely different game that just got designed by the same person who worked on some Sonic games.

@Ardisan It worked in Unleashed because the graphics were pushing that 12fps gameplay, and most of the levels were lengthy in 3D sections.

The boost games suck because they’re huge pace breakers, Generations is basically a fancy demo if you strip out the 2D gameplay. Then of course comes Forces with its “hold-a-button-to-win” gameplay.

After playing this game for a solid 3 hours I have to say it’s really not THAT bad. I didn’t play on switch so I didn’t experience the technical issues but I’d give the game a 6.5. Game is definitely a bit dated by today’s standards but it’s also not a game you wouldn’t want to finish (like the way I felt about 06’ sonic the hedgehog)

If the game goes on deep sale I’d recommend giving it a try.

@Scoopz I’ve been playing it all morning and it’s really not that bad. Glad I didn’t listen to this review to be totally honest.

And also that’s not how game publishing works, if you don’t support they’ll never get another chance. I’m all for boycotting ***** publishers doing ***** things but if one of my favorite developers makes a so-so game I’m going to support him so that I might see future projects from him. Nothing wrong with giving a game dev feedback and letting them know how you feel while still supporting them.

@Okapi The character design is pretty good too. But for some reason they decided to make them practically non-entities.

You’d think with 80 different creature characters and 14 human characters including the main characters. They’d do like Mario, Banjo or Spyro where you talk to and do tasks for them. Rather than them being glorified props dancing on a loop.

I have a feeling when the articles on the usefulness of demos comes back around Balan is going to be a very important mention. The interest drummed up by the trailers and Nights energy was decimated by the demo.

These guys played the demo and made a full group video ragging on how terrible it was. And nothing seems to have been changed. No surprise given how it came close it came out to launch.

Did nobody involved know how bad this was turning out? Then again the studio’s named after this character, so it must be the dream project from someone at the top. I don’t think they’re going to get more games after this.

This demo was bad. The mechanics are fundamentally broken. Jumping feels off, there’s no weight to the character, there’s seemingly no point to what you’re doing, the QTE’s didn’t add anything – and seriously, I thought we were done with QTEs? Who ever thought they were a good idea? – the different abilities is an interesting concept, but executed so poorly… If one of your abilities is lost, and you need it, what then? Backtrack all over the place to find a crystal that HOPEFULLY is holding the one you need at that time? They seem to show up randomly in the crystals, so you could potentially keep getting ones you can’t use. What a mess of a game, and this was supposed to be a spiritual successor to Nights? Maybe stick to the 2D plane, Mr. Naka.

Well, if a game looks bad in the trailer, and then after it’s released lots of people say it’s bad, then… um, what should a rational person do? Most of us have enough critically acclaimed games in our backlogs that we’re not going to bother thinking “Hmm, maybe this 3/10 game is actually the perfect game for me. @TheLightSpirit An interesting point, indeed. So, there’s the first impression which is based on trailers, screenshots, and articles on sites such as our lovely NL. If something passes this stage, I would be seeing some real gameplay on yt. And then I would buy it or add to the wishlist or just skip. The real judging part, however, comes only after I’d actually have played the game. Accordingly, my initial post was not an expression of an opinion or judgement (meant as a point or a assertion) but just a recollection of my first psychological impression of that game (as an experience) which eventually turned out to be in line with this review.

@samuelvictor What exactly do you find “incredible” about the level design? I found the levels to be very simplistic for a collectathon platformer and not fun to explore, the Balan statues aren’t particularly well hidden so there’s not really much incentive to explore the levels.

And yeah, we get that the levels are supposed to be dreamlike. That doesn’t make the disappearing NPC thing sensible or good. The levels are already barren with only a handful of enemies appearing once in a while in the levels, not having actual NPCs make them feel like barren wastelands. It doesn’t leave me wondering what’s wrong with this world, it leaves me wondering what’s wrong with this game. There’s barely anything going on in the level and yet it looks and run so poorly.

  193Bolt_StrikeTue 30th Mar 2021

@samuelvictor That’s a very low bar to clear for the level design, those are basic things a game needs to get right. And there are some basic things it still doesn’t get right. I would disagree about no space being wasted, there are lots of empty stretches where you’re just running and there’s nothing to interact with. And just backtracking to a simple puzzle isn’t really fun, it’s tedious. Backtracking is usually better when backtracking to an old area unlocks a new section. Balan rarely does that because of its linear nature.

And there are better ways to portray that desolation and crumbling mindscape than having plain looking levels with nothing in them. Like you know, having more than 5 enemies in an entire level for starters. The levels could’ve shown that the levels were actually crumbling and infested with enemies to show that your interaction with the levels is actually fixing the characters’ problems but nope.

The simplicity of the game proves to be a hindrance, not a benefit. Simple games can be fun when they provide a level of focus that makes the game engaging and varied, Balan does not. It’s just simple to be cheap.

that’s a shame, the art style is pretty and if this had done well, it could’ve led to a resurgence in big-budget 3D platformers outside of Nintendo and the odd Knack. the AAA space is so homogeneous, but why is this the second major release in the span of 6 months that had to be patched due to potential epilepsy dangers? like, what? publishers and developers, your games can wait, especially these days when there are more than enough video games available to tide them over while you ensure that it is actually safe to play.

Another major critic has posted their review of Balan in IGN, they gave it a 4/10:

  https://www.ign.com/articles/balan-wonderworld-review

So yeah, critics are deservedly slamming this game, it seems like only a matter of time before a parade of low scores sinks what little reputation this game has left.

what struck me playing the demo on Switch, is that graphically, it looked this a PS3 launch title

@Strictlystyles Wow, you must really like the guy if you feel like you need to light $60 on fire for him.

@BAN I’ve actually played it for a few hours and it’s really not that bad of a game. I can name worse tbh. If anything the gameplay is dated but it isn’t necessarily a bad game.

I am actually a fan of the games that Yuji Naka creates. I will probably buy this when it is on sale. When I play his games I always get a feeling they are a game generation behind. I had a blast playing Rodea the Sky Soldier and a lot of reviews were harsh on the game.

@Strictlystyles There’s like millions of video games in existence so that’s not saying much.

boy am I relieved while reading this review.

I played the demo over and over and wondered what was wrong with me, I feared for my own life. I thought I had lost it, no more taste in games and no longer able to see the bright side of stuff.

fortunately, decent games are still decent games and I can still tell whether a game is good or not. this is not.

the only thing I can quote from the first part of the game is JAMES POND. I hope everyone is old enough to recall the game.

This game is an absolute dog. The result of an artistic vision going unchecked and unrestrained, with yes men greenlighting every creative decision and nobody stopping to take stock or to offer criticism on the product. With all that said, I’ve had untold fun watching the demo when it came out and now the game being torn apart in Discord streams, with everyone taking the piss and howling with laughter over what a ***** show this game is. The game may be awful but I am always going to have good memories with it for that reason.

I’m amazed they didn’t end up marketing this as a budget game for preschoolers or something. The gameplay is utterly infantile, the character designs are appealing and the environments are bright and colourful, and there is a lack of English text being used throughout the game. Then maybe the criticism would have been less harsh.

As everyone already knows about me I like to support devs by buying all major games on Switch. However this is a big NO. Everything about this game has always looked like UTTER *****. What the ***** is up with that main characters stupid design? To think this platform also has the actual games of this side of the millennium in Breath of the Wild, MH Rise, Mario Odyssey too.

Oh yes, it is definitely a WONDER land, it got that part right.

  Dear SE,

You’ve done a good job with the Switch so far. Saga games, Final Fantasy games, Star Ocean, Legend of Mana, Trials of Mana translated for the west– Not bad. Feel free to continue using your resources to, I dunno… Toss Act Raiser, Soul Blazer, and Illusion of Gaia our way again, and maybe send at long last Terranigma to the western hemisphere. KTHNXBAI!

Watching a little, like 10 seconds, of gameplay from that first level game me an extremely bad headache from that weird warping effect on the game world.

No. I’ve played through most of the game and albeit dated, actually isn’t as bad as the reviewers say.

I want to get this game — when it is 67% (or more) off.

  It is a nice-looking version of a 1990s platformer.

  Great idea but terrible execution.
